Shot an arrow – and once again missed the target.
I’d like to think that they are trying to do the right thing. That this is just another misguided oversight and “honest mistake” … however, that saying “fool me once, shame on you – fool me twice, shame on me” seems to fit the situation.
COT called a meeting for Monday – with no meaningful notice. Again, Facebook notified the community
“Mayor Marilyn Strickland is hosting a public roundtable meeting with stakeholders of the Tideflats on Sept. 26, from 1:30 – 4 p.m., at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center (1500 Broadway in Downtown Tacoma, Ballroom D). Participating stakeholders will represent a range of perspectives, and include leaders from education, business, labor, civil rights, cultural, environmental and neighborhood organizations. contact Forbes, Office of Mayor Strickland, firstname.lastname@example.org, (253) 591-5166”
These leaders have been hand-picked by city leadership and have been given authority (agency) to speak on your behalf and on mine. Since I have no idea who these hand-selected ‘stakeholders’ are, I have no idea if they have agency to speak on my behalf. I can tell you, very few people have ever been given agency to speak on my behalf, especially to speak to power. I am very capable of doing that on my own, thank you.
I kind of feel sorry for COT leadership. They are allowing themselves to be influenced and pressured by industry to follow an operating rhythm that is not conducive to good governance. Industry’s operating rhythm is tied to Wall Street and works to a mandate of providing profits to shareholders.
COT leadership should follow an operating rhythm that honors the fact that there are far more numerous and diverse “shareholders” and “stakeholders” than industry represents. The mandate of good governance knows that you do not sacrifice the long term safety, security and sustainability of the community for the short term gains driven by industry. Your children, grand children and great grandchildren are relying on you to practice good governance. All the time. Every time.
Please spread the word so that, hopefully, a good representation of the citizens of Tacoma can be in attendance. If you can’t attend…..call COT. Tweet COT. Email COT – tell them that meaningful consultation honors the citizens they are supposed to represent and can’t be rushed or scheduled last minute for a select few. Tell them that you DO NOT GRANT AGENCY OR AUTHORITY to their hand-selected “stakeholder” panel.
