What are our relatives saying?

171Have you been listening? Noticing? I’ve been noticing that our relatives, the mountains, have been hanging on to the snow. We’ve not had any major spring flooding events, that I recall hearing about. The snow is staying close to those hills.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. It makes me happy, at some level. I think “good – stay up there…gather your strength and medicine…we are going to need it here very soon”. But then I also wonder what it means for our normal environmental patterns. If and when the heat comes, will we be facing major flooding events then? And where will the fish and the animals be in their cycles if the flooding happens late in the year?

I have to have some faith. I have to invoke some of the wisdom that comes with age, and not worry about it too much. To keep my mind and heart on the present, on the tasks in front of me and on the blessings that exist in this moment.

If you haven’t noticed – take a minute. Ti’Swaq, the Olympic range, the northern Cascades – they are all holding tight to that relative nbi. Keeping her safe and having good reciprocal relationship. Go have a look, and send your prayers up to them. Offer them gratitude for the care and concern they have for us. Listen for their wisdom. It’s there.
